Led Zeppelin II

Following Bob Dylan and Black Sabbath in the classic albums feature, it is now time to feature a classic album from a classic rock band (pun intended).

Calling this a classic album might be an understatement. It is more than that. It’s the type of album that’ll make you sweat rock’n’roll, and make you want to learn how to play guitar.

From the majestic riffage to the mind-blowing drumming, this album is what personifies rock’n’roll for me.

Black Sabbath Paranoid

After posting Bob Dylan’s “Highway 61 Revisited”, I decided to have a “classic albums week”. It might last longer than a week, and during that period I’ll only be posting my favourite classic (as in everyone should know these) albums.

The albums won’t be sorted in any specific order, I’ll just post them as I remember.

Today’s album is Black Sabbath’s “Paranoid”.

Bob Dylan – Highway 61 Revisited

There’s no need to talk about this album, right? essential recording
Dylan was virtually gushing great songs when this masterpiece arrived in the summer of 1965. From the epochal opening of “Like a Rolling Stone” through the absurdly apocalyptic closer, “Desolation Row,” his command of surrealistic language was daring and amazing. As a vocalist, he was rewriting the rules of the game. Jimi Hendrix made note of Mr. Z’s technically suspect pitch and decided that he too was a singer. And the backing, though ragged, is precisely right. Is this the essential Dylan album? It’s certainly one of them. –Steven Stolder

Dave Matthews Band – Before These Crowded Streets

Dave Matthews Band - Before These Crowded Streets

Dave Matthews Band is another one of the bands deserving of a spot in my heart. Sax player LeRoi Moore passed away earlier this year, and it made me feel like I had lost a good friend.

I’ll never forgive myself for not being able to see them when they visited Portugal in 2007 (I went to the show, but my stomach decided to stop working sometime between the end of the opening act and the beginning of the show, so I missed most of it). I wish I could go back in time and enjoy the show properly :(
